My American Brother

My American Brother
Regina Puckett
With a jerk of the knee
You said you didn’t like me
Have we ever spoken or met?
Over there was close as we get
But you made up your mind
To be so unloving and unkind
So go ahead and decide to hate
Never knowing me will only be your fate
But I’m much better than you think
Even if hearts close faster than a blink
I’m not everything and sometimes much less
That others say I am – they only guess
They lump us all together into a weird stew
Until we simmer into a strange – tasteless brew
Until no one can tell me part from the other
A melting pot of hearts – my American brother
