We All Waited

Regina Puckett

The air turned breezy and crisp

And slowly filled with a dewy wisp

Leaves fell in shades of orange and red

As they covered our flowers in their deathbed

We all waited with watchful, bated breath

For winter’s approach and its promised death

Why couldn’t we just enjoy autumn’s vibrant show

Because the chill laughed whenever the wind did blow

It nipped at our arms and promised to soon bring ice

Because everything beautiful has its own steep price
