That Will be the Day

Regina Puckett

Ten tiny toes

His father’s nose

One day in the cradle

The next – another man’s label

A child always in his mother’s heart

In a world that will slowly tear him apart

They only see his color, religion – never his humanity

And only say his name laced with hurtful profanity

But this child is more than the label the world sees

He’s a heart – a soul knelt before God – on his knees

He wants what every other person in this world longs for

That you see him for who he is before you close that door

He only asks you love his heart and not only see his color

And that will be the day we’ll learn how to love one another
