No Wonder the Babies Cry

Regina Puckett

A chill fills the air and frost covers the ground

Outside tiny buds spark like a princess’s jeweled crown

Children are buried beneath their covers in serene sleep

Safe in the knowledge their parents will always guard the keep

No one hears the newspaper being tossed onto the porch

Declaring that in the night someone dropped the torch

The fire scorched our hope, leaving only burnt earth

No wonder the babies cry after each and every birth
