Engrossed in Our Own Importance

Regina Puckett

In our ignorant blindness

We often underestimate kindness

We regularly brush away that comforting hand

As we stand up and make our entitled demand

We rarely remember who helped us up the ladder

And we soon forget those who really did matter

We become so engrossed in our own importance

We shoo away what nags and pricks our conscience

Until we look around and discover we’re all alone

And those who really loved us are forever gone
