Their Beautiful Petals

Regina Puckett

September eleventh we saw how hatred slaughters

Our brothers, mothers, fathers, sons and daughters

Our hearts were trapped inside those twin towers

As they were turned into dust-covered metal flowers

From a distance we watched with unbelieving eyes

As their beautiful petals fell amidst startled, choked cries

Pieces of our hearts died a little on that September day

But hatred will never kill our courage or the American way
