They Close Their Eyes

Regina Puckett

The young are small, helpless pawns

Hidden in quiet homes with manicured lawns

There’s no one to see their bruises or tears

Until they finally implode from pain and fears

But for now they crawl inside to escape home

Seeking a special land where they can safely roam

They close their eyes whenever life becomes too hard

So their tiny hearts won’t become bitter and scarred
